Revenge of the Hashishin’s, 1910

Et le soleil se coucha sur l’Adriatique (Sunset over the Adriatic)- And a name for the artist? Joachim-Raphael Boronali aka Aliboron aka Lolo the Donkey

Revenge of the Hashishin’s

Although the original Hashishin hangout the ‘Cabaret des Assassins’ in Paris was now known as the Lapin Agile, the spirt of the Hashishin lived on…

In March 1910 one of the old regulars Frédéric Gérard aka “Frede” was now barkeep and caretaker of the Lapin Agile.  Bringing the spirit of the Hashishin’s with him, the place was still a favorite hangout of the artist, smokers and day dreamers of the time.

During a afternoon of intoxication Roland Dorgelès (young art critic), writer André Warnod, illustrator Jules Deraquit and of course Frede were inspired by the Hashishin spirit.

While being the caretaker of the bar itself, Frede also cared for his pet and the unofficial bar mascot named Aliboron aka Lolo.

With a head full of intoxicating ideas, Frede grabs a canvas and paints 2 colors separating the picture. Next he ties a paintbrush to Lolo’s tail, and sets the painting under the brush after dipping it in paint.

Feeding Lolo carrots and tobacco leaves she wag’s her tail back and forth on the painting and to everyone’s excitement a masterpiece…

As the laughs carry on with more intoxication, the days entertainment gets brought to the next level…

Lolo and the pranksters 1910

The mischievous groups prank was only reveled when a paper published the whole story by the pranksters at the Lapin Agile and their Donkey Lolo the next morning…

Although names and place’s will change, the Hashishin spirit will always live on!
