Industrial Useful Plants
Hemp
Plant of the family Ulmaceae, which is believed to be native to Central Asia and cultivated as a textile plant and as an oleaginous plant in a large number of countries. The wood of its stem, called hurds, is used for making matches. Its seeds, known as hempseed, provide by expression a drying oil used in painting and for the manufacture of black soap. Finally, the leaves of some species of hemp are used in the manufacture of hashish.
Hemp produces soft, long, very stubborn fibers that are placed in the bark and must be discarded before use. This operation is activated by retting, followed by grinding, scutching and finally spinning. Hemp is used to make canvases, ropes, cables, etc.
