Coast of Hash, 1977

Two dutch police officers pose with bales of hash washed ashore on the Zeeland coast, July 1977

The Coast of Hash

‘In July 1977 thousands of kilo’s of hashish mysteriously washed up on the beaches of Walcheren in the Netherlands. For more than two weeks the Dutch coast was overrun by more that 4,000 kilo’s of the tightly wrapped ‘Yellow Lebanese hash’.

The source of the hash remains a mystery, although police believed a Lebanese ship named the ‘Astrid’ dumped the load when the vessel caught on fire and required a towed to port. Locals jokingly renamed the beach Costa del Hasj, ‘The Coast of Hash’.’

‘Two girls laugh at the ‘Costa del hasj’ (Coast of Hash) sign, next to the path through the dunes.’ Walcheren, Netherlands  July 1977
